Apparently, Microsoft's Chromebook killer is the new Surface Laptop. Unveiled today at company's education-focused event
In the past few weeks, we've been hearing some rumors suggesting that Microsoft was gearing up to launch a Chromebook killer this month. And apparently, those rumors were true. Today, at Microsoft's education-focused event in New York, this company finally introduced a new Surface laptop. And yes, it's aimed at no other than Chromebooks.

However, unlike other Chromebooks that mostly are affordable to buy, this Microsoft' new Surface laptop, on the other hand, will be one hell of a pricey high-end laptop. The price starts at $999.99 with specs like Intel Core i5, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of SSD on board.

It will also be the world's first laptop to ship with Windows 10S out of the box - which is the new Cloud-based operating system dedicated for education market.

The good news, if this Surface laptop is too expensive for you, don't you worry my friend. According to Microsoft, there will be many hardware partners from Fujitsu, HP, Acer, Samsung, ASUS and Toshiba that will also be offering Windows 10S laptops in affordable price range, starting at $189.

Acer and HP are the first 2 hardware partners that just introduced their new affordable Windows 10S laptops today after Microsoft's announcement. Both will cost only $299.99.

What's so great about Microsoft Surface Laptop?

So what's so special about this new Surface laptop?

What makes this computing device deserve a really expensive $999.99 price tag?

Well, if we're looking at this laptop in the whole aspect, it's very obvious that Surface laptop has all what it takes to be a high-end laptop.

It comes with premium aluminum finish all over the place. It's also thinner, lighter and 50% much faster than even Apple's Macbook Pro and Macbook Air, as claimed by Microsoft.

Microsoft Surface laptop features a 13.5-inch display sporting the 1080p resolution. But we believe this is only the base model, which means you can bump up its screen with much sharper resolution.

The coolest thing is, just like most of new-gen laptops today, this Surface laptop also comes with a touchscreen display. And it also works with Surface Pen, Surface Dial and more.

Speaking about the software, this Surface laptop is running on Microsoft's new cloud-based OS called Windows 10S. It's actually the simplified version of Windows 10 Pro OS, which means it will be more efficient with power consumption.

It's also more secure than the regular version mainly because users are only allowed to install apps straightly from official Windows store. So apps from 3rd party websites are not welcome here.

But according to Microsoft, users can run 3rd party apps outside Windows Store, but they will be required to upgrade this laptop from Windows 10S to Windows 10 Pro.

Hardware Specs

In terms of specs, this new Surface laptop packs a lot of punch in its thin design. It's got an Intel Core i5 processor, 4gigs of RAM and 128GB of SSD. But this is only the base mode, which is the cheapest variant of all.

So if you want to get the one with Intel Core i7 processor, sharper display, bigger RAM and so on, of course the price will dig deeper in your pocket.

Another cool thing about this Surface laptop is, its keyboard uses fabric materials, just like the one used on Surface Pro 4's Limited-edition keyboard.

According to theVerge, the keyboard feels pretty good, the buttons are responsive and it doesn't feel like the Chiclet-style keyboard found on the regular 12-inch Macbook.

Battery Life

Microsoft claims that this Surface laptop is capable to deliver a 14 and a half hour of battery life to users, which is awesome because you can totally use it all day without needing to recharge it during the day.

Ports and Speakers

There are some regular ports equipped on this machine, from regular USB ports, mini display port. Unfortunately, there is NO USB Type-C on this laptop, which is a bummer given that most of today's new-gen laptops already come with this port.

Interestingly, Microsoft decides to place the speakers underneath the laptop, which is on the back of keyboard. So there are no speaker grills whatsoever on the inside of the laptop.

When will it come out?

Microsoft Surface Laptop will be available soon on June 15. As mentioned above, the price starts at $999.99 for the base model with Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM and 128GB SSD. So you can expect the price to go up for the one with beefier specs.

This laptop will be available in wide range of colors, from Cobalt, Platinum, Blue, Burgundy and Graphite Gold. So if you're interested of getting this laptop, expect it to hit the shelves this month. But the most importantly, make sure first that you have $999.999 in your pocket.
