Xiaomi Mi Pad 7.9
For some users, they normally think that it’s not necessary to root their smartphones or tablets probably because they don’t feel the need to do that.

Meanwhile, some of others are also on the same page but mostly because they don’t have any clue about how to root their devices or they don’t know what the benefits of rooting their tablets/smartphones.

Besides, rooting can void the warranty of their devices so this already scares them easily to even think about rooting their devices. So no wonder many users opt to stay out and avoid anything related to rooting.

However, rooting is actually not really scary as everyone thought it would be. In fact, thanks to massive developments of rooting for the past couple of years, now rooting Android device can be as simple as flipping the palm of your hand.

The great thing is, by rooting your device, there are many benefits and possibilities that are waiting to be unlocked if you’re brave enough to do that. Besides, if you care enough with your device’s warranty, you can actually undo your action by unrooting and clean all the rooting traces from your device's system.

Anyway, earlier, I just shared to you about how to root your Android devices in my previous post. However, I only shared a few rooting methods of some tablets in that article.

Today, I want to share to you the rooting process of one great tablet from Xiaomi, Xiaomi MiPad Tablet, a 7.9-inch tablet powered by Tegra K1 processor, 192-core Keppler GPU and 2GB of RAM.

And this tablet is insanely powerful for gaming. So you can basically throw any heavy 3D game on this device and it will execute that game nicely without any problem.

WARNING!! Do this at your own risk!! I will not be responsible for anything wrong that might happen on your device!

How to root Xiaomi Mi Pad Tablet?

I used to own one Xiaomi smartphone – Xiaomi Redmi 1S – and from what I’ve seen, the rooting process of Xiaomi MiPad is basically similar with Redmi 1S. In fact, they are exactly the same.

So first, you download a rooting file (update.zip) and the Developer ROM file of MIUI from MIUI official forum, and then flash the update.zip files and voila, your Xiaomi device is finally rooted.

Well okay then, if you're interested to find out how exactly to root your Xiaomi MiPad, then here in this tutorial, I'm gonna show you the step-by-step guide to root your Xiaomi MiPad device.

But before you proceed to the first step of this tutorial, I want you to know that I will not be responsible for anything wrong that might happen to your tablet. So you do this tutorial at your own risk!

Xiaomi’s policy about rooting

Some of you here probably don’t know that Xiaomi has the policy which allows its users to root their Xiaomi devices without voiding the warranty. So even if you have rooted your Xiaomi device, you can still claim the 1-year warranty on Xiaomi service center. And they will still accept your rooted Xiaomi device.

Isn’t that cool, huh?

1.Sign up to MIUI.com community forum

Okay, the first you need to do here is go to MIUI official forum and then sign up your own account there.

This is really important, in fact it is the most important step here, because in order to root your device, you must firstly download the rooting zip files that are provided by Xiaomi itself on its official MIUI forum.

And in order to be able to download these files, you must sign in to your account because if you haven’t signed up, this download link on the forum will not show up on your web browser.

You probably wonder why does Xiaomi share these rooting files on its official MIUI forum, right?

Well, as mentioned above, Xiaomi has a more flexible policy that allows its users to root their Xiaomi devices without voiding the warranty. This is actually the main reason why Xiaomi devices are awesome.

Anyway, after signing up to that forum, now sign in and go into your account using the username and password you previously registered when signing up.

2. Download “update.zip” file and Developer ROM from MIUI forum

Now go to this dedicated page on MIUI official forum (en.miui.com/thread-30617-1-1.html) about how to root Xiaomi MiPad Tablet and then scroll down to find the download link of a rooting file called “update.zip”. It’s actually really small and even tiny in size so it’s not going to squeeze a lot of your data.

And then download also the second file on this page (en.miui.com/download-229.html), which is the Developer ROM of this tablet. But remember, you must download the last file at the end of the page (Developer ROM) and select the green button "Download Full ROM".

3. Put the zip files in the root directory of internal storage

Okay, if after finish downloading the“update.zip” and "Developer ROM" zip files, now move those files (Cut – Paste) to the root directory of internal storage on your Xiaomi MiPad Tablet. You can actually do this using the file manager provided by Xiaomi on this device.

4. Open Updater app

Now open an app on your MiPad tablet called “Updater”. Anyway, for your information, this app is actually an app that is dedicated specifically to upgrade your device’s OS to the latest MIUI software updates.

So if you want to check the current available software updates for your Xiaomi device, then Updater is the app you want to check out regularly.

5. Install Developer ROM to your tablet

After opening the Updater app, the MIUI visual intro will be shown at the first time. Once the app starts, press the menu option which you can find it on the TOP RIGHT area on the screen. If you have found it, now select “Select Update Package”.

After pressing that option, you will be brought to the file manager of this tablet. Now find the Developer ROM zip file that you just downloaded earlier. If I'm not mistaken, it goes by the name "miui_MOCHA_5.4.3_1660284004_4_4.zip". Now select this file to let your tablet install this ROM.

After selecting the file, you will be brought back to Updater app showing you the colorful balloons of MIUI 6 spreading out on the screen. And then, the updating process will start.

Once the updating process is complete, there will be a button on the bottom of the screen to reboot your device. Now press it.

It usually will take a few minutes for this tablet when rebooting. So just leave your tablet alone on the table without any interruption.

6. Press menu option and select “Reboot to Recovery”

Okay, after finish rebooting and the tablet has been updated with the Developer ROM, now it's the time to root your MiPad tablet.

Now open again the Updater app and then select option and press "Reboot to Recovery". In this process, we will try to install the "update.zip" file you just downloaded earlier on MIUI forum.

You can actually reboot to recovery by turning the device OFF and then turning it ON again by pressing VOLUME UP + POWER BUTTONS at the same time. But I believe it’s much easier and more efficient to do this through the Updater app.

7. Select English language

Now you’re in the recovery mode. On the first screen, you will be prompted with the options of languages that you would like to use in this recovery mode.

To choose the language in the option, press the VOLUME BOTTOM to choose and if you have found your choice, press the POWER BUTTON to select. Of course, you’re gonna choose “English” in the option, right?

8. Select Install update.zip to System One

Earlier in the step number 3, I’ve already asked you to put the “update.zip” file right in the root directory of your tablet (internal storage). If you do that, the system will recognize this file automatically.

So on the next screen, select “Install update.zip to System One”. By doing this, you are one inch closer to rooting your device.

9. Select Yes

On the next screen, the system will ask you: “Confirm install update.zip to System One?”. Now select the option “Yes” to confirm that you’re ready to root your device with “update.zip” file.

10. Wait until the system installs the update.zip

Next your device will try to install “update.zip” file into the system. All you need to do now is wait until the process is complete and the percentage number is finally reaching 100%.

11. Go back and Select Reboot to System One

Okay, the “update.zip” file has been flashed/installed on your Xiaomi MiPad. To reboot your tablet and go back to normal homescreen, now select the “Back” button and select “Reboot” > “Reboot to System One”.

12. Your Xiaomi MiPad tablet is now rooted

Congratulations! Now your Xiaomi MiPad tablet has been successfully rooted. If you want to be sure if your tablet has been rooted or not, you can download “Root Checker” on Google Play Store, grant the root permission for this app and then run the root checker.

13. Update the SuperSU app and Reboot

Right after rebooting and entering to the homescreen, you can see that there is one new app called “SuperSU” installed on your device. This app is the main rooting app that you’re gonna use to grant root permission for some certain apps on your device.

However, in order for this rooting app to work properly on your Xiaomi MiPad tablet, you need to update its binary. The system actually will prompt you to update this app the first time you open this app. You just need to activate the internet connection of your device and then select "Continue" > "Normal".

After the updating process is complete, the system will ask you to reboot your device. Now select "Reboot" on the prompted window.

14. Keep the update.zip file on your tablet

Usually, whenever you try to upgrade the operating system of your MiPad tablet with the next software updates, you need to do the rooting process all over again. This is why I strongly recommend you to keep the "update.zip" file on your device.

What’s next?

After successfully rooting your device, then what’s next?

Well, there are actually tons of stuff that you can do with your rooted Xiaomi Mi Pad Tablet, like installing CWM custom recovery mode so you can make the backup system of your tablet or you can also install an app called “Secure Setting” so you can enable again the quick toggle of internet connection on this device.

Anyway, if you want to know how exactly to install ClockWorkMod custom recovery tool to replace THE STANDARD RECOVERY MODE of your device, here I’m about to show you how.

1. Download CWM from MIUI official forum

Okay, this step is actually similar with the first step above. I assume that now you have already signed up to MIUI official forum and signed in to your account. If you have, now go to this page (en.miui.com/thread-65770-1-1.html) and then scroll down to find the download link of “CWM_6.0.5.0_Mipad.zip” for Xiaomi Mi Pad 7.9 Tablet.

2. Open File Explorer and the CWM file

After downloading the “CWM_6.0.5.0_Mipad.zip” from MIUI forum, now open “File Explorer“ app and then find the CWM file you just downloaded.

3. Extract the CWM recovery image file to root directory

Once you found the “CWM_6.0.5.0_Mipad.zip” file, now press that file and then select “Extract Here” in the prompted options. This to extract the folder of “CWM_6.0.5.0_Mipad” to root directory so next you’ll be able to flash the recovery image file of CWM inside that folder.

4. Download and Install “Flashify” on Google Play Store

Now open Google Play Store and download an app called “Flashify”. This is an app that allows you to flash any image file like CWM or TWRP image file and install it on your device system.

5. Grant root permission on Flashify

Before using this app, make sure that you have granted the root permission for Flashify. You can simply do that by open the Flashify app and select “Grant” on the prompted window.

6. Find the CWM recovery image you just downloaded earlier

Okay, after granting the root permission for this app, now inside the app, select “Recovery Image” > and then press “Choose the file”.

7. Choose File Explorer on Flashify

After selecting “Choose the File”, on the next screen, choose “File Explorer” to browse the CWM file on your device.

Now find the folder named “CWM_6.0.5.0_Mipad” and open that folder. Inside it, select the recovery image file named “CWM_recovery.img”.

8. Flash the CWM image file

After choosing the recovery image file of “CWM_recovery.img”, the system will prompt you the window “Flash Recovery” to confirm your action. Now select “Yup” in the options.

9. Reboot to Recovery

When Flashify finishes flashing that recovery image file to the system, you may want to test out the CWM custom recovery mode by rebooting to recovery mode. On the next prompted window, choose “Reboot Now”

10. CWM has been installed on your device

Congrats, now you have successfully installed CWM custom recovery tool on your Xiaomi Mi Pad. When you finally enter CWM recovery mode, you can now create the backup system of your device or you can go back to the normal homescreen by choosing “reboot system now”.
