Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet vs Sony Xperia Z: Tablet Battle

Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet vs Sony Xperia Z: Tablet BattleHi guys, welcome back!

Ever since Sony decided to “divorce” Ericsson from part of its company, this Japanese-based manufacturer is now more focused to delivering its devices mostly on high-end market.

I’m not saying that this company has totally ditched mid-end and low-end market entirely.

Well, that’s so wrong because Sony still has some mid-end to low-end devices in its latest smartphone lineup – like Sony Xperia E1 for example.

But Sony now really puts its global priority mostly to compete with giant smartphone makers like Apple and Samsung instead of other small players on the market.

Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet vs Sony Xperia Z benchmarks and gaming performance

Well, this actually has been the tradition that Sony still continues around the tablet market until today.

Even from the very first time it jumped to bandwagon, this company already showed its intention very clearly, which was to make high-end tablets.

And that could be seen by its first-generation devices – Sony Xperia Tablet S and Sony Xperia Tablet P – that aimed straightly on high-end segment.

But Sony doesn’t have any plan to stop there yet. In 2014, this manufacturer is back again to keep cranking out more of its tablet creations.

This year, however, Sony released 2 generations of tablets but they fall in 2 entirely different markets – a 10.1-inch Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet and an 8-inch Sony Xperia Z3 Compact Tablet.

But of course, i’m not going to talk about these 2 devices in this comparison review – or at least not yet (probably in the near future).

However, the tablets that i’m really interested to bring to the ring today are actually the current and predecessor models - Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet and Sony Xperia Z Tablet.

Well, if you’re interested to find out about these 2 devices and see their comparison in this review, as well as my take on their gaming performance, then here you go, my personal comparison review between Sony Xperia Z2 and Sony Xperia Z Tablet.

Introduction

Released early in 2013, Sony Xperia Z Tablet became the first flagship tablet that arrived to the global tablet market.

As the first flagship tablet to come up that early, Sony certainly had put a lot of thoughts especially on how the market would behave with the arrival of this device.

Sony Xperia Tablet Z Tablet is actually an impressive device even in high-end tablet market.

It’s packing a fast powerful processor and GPU, great sharp-looking design, solid build quality a la Xperia, sharp full HD display, huge battery, great camera, impressive software, great gaming performance and pretty much everything on this device is just great for a flagship device.

Unfortunately, as a flagship tablet that arrived to early in 2013, Sony Xperia Z Tablet surprisingly received so many negative reviews around the tech world.

Many tech reviewers on YouTube and some tech sites really put the scrutiny on the mediocre display found on this device.

According to those reviews, the display of Sony Xperia Z Tablet has bad viewing angle, the colors look washed out and it also has muffled sound quality.

But thankfully, there’s Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 for the rescue.

Even though it took almost a year before Sony finally decided to launch this new-gen model to the market, it was totally worth the wait because on this second-gen Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet, Sony did really address some of the flaws found on the predecessor and made it up on this successor.

So Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet can be considered as the ‘perfect’ version of Sony Xperia Z Tablet.

Not only did Sony make some huge improvements on the display, but it also revamped some the sectors on this second-gen Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet – from the processor, UI, design, software, Android build, camera and of course, water and dust resistance certification.

The same actually also happened on the smartphone model of this tablet - Sony Xperia Z2 -, which also received some upgrades and improvements especially on the display sector.

But the questions remain. With of these improvements made by Sony on this successor model, which one between Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet and Sony Xperia Z Tablet that deserves to be a better gaming tablet the whole aspect?

Is it worth it to upgrade to Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet if you already own Sony Xperia Z Tablet?

Design

The first-ever-gen Sony Xperia Tablet S already looked impressive and in fact, stand out compared to other competing tablets on the market back then.

And it goes the same with the latest-gen models - Sony Xperia Tablet Z and Sony Xperia Tablet Z2.

However, unlike the predecessor, on these new-gen models, Sony decides to ditch that “thick rear shoulder” found on Sony Xperia Tablet S.

So the rear-cover of both Sony Xperia Tablet Z and Z2 is now flat with no shoulder, curve or any unique shape.

But this is a good decision by using more flat design approach, Sony Xperia Tablet Z and Z2 look more elegant and more compact as media-consumption devices.

Besides on the rear-cover, Sony also makes the rounded corners of both devices much sharper than the old-gen Sony Xperia Tablet S, which has fully rounded rectangular corners.

And these corners look much even sharper on the Sony Xperia Tablet Z2, with metal trim all over the bezels, as opposed to dark gray trim on the bezels of Sony Xperia Tablet Z.

Between Sony Xperia Tablet Z and Z2, i think the new-gen Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 looks much better and more elegant especially thanks to its metal trim all over the bezels, which makes it look premium than the predecessors.

However, the design of Sony Xperia Tablet Z is also good and has its own characteristic compared to its counterparts around the market.

Anyway, the other design improvement made by Sony on Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 also takes places on its dust and water proof certification.

Given its much improved IP58 certification (which allows this tablet to swim inside the water for 30 minutes in the depth of 1 meter), now Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 is definitely much tighter especially in protecting every port to prevent any water and dust from entering inside the internals of the device.

This is actually a pretty huge improvement over Sony Xperia Tablet Z with its IP57 certification.

The hardware specs inside Sony Xperia Tablet Z are actually considered as great and powerful especially back in the days of 2013.

However, as the new-gen model, Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 will of course need some new upgrades especially on the sector of performance. And that’s what exactly happens on these 2 devices.

If Sony Xperia Tablet Z is already good enough with its Snapdragon 600 processor, Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB of RAM, then Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 will be much even better in performance with Snapdragon 801 processor, Adreno 330 GPU and a bigger 3GB of RAM.

However, almost the rest of the spec sheet on both Sony Xperia Tablet Z and Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 is actually pretty similar one to another (with the exception of their water and dust proof certifications of course).

They share the same full HD 1920x1200 pixel display, an 8.1MP rear-facing camera, 2.2MP front-facing camera, microSD card for up to 64GB, 16GB of native storage and the same 6000mAh battery capacity.

But for the software, it’s no-brainer to guess that Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 will come with newer build of Android OS than the predecessor.

    Screen

If there is one part on both of these tablets that gets some huge improvements and upgrades from Sony, then it’s definitely their screen.

It’s actually not a secret anymore that the screen of Sony Xperia Tablet Z is really mediocre and it’s not up to par with other competing rivals on the market, especially the iPads.

So according to many tech reviewers on YouTube and some famous tech sites across the net, the display of this tablet has bad viewing angle and its colors also look washed out.

And this cannot be tolerated especially because Sony Xperia Tablet Z is priced really high by Sony on high-end market.

This actually also happens on the smartphone model - Sony Xperia Z – with the same issues on its display.

But thankfully, Sony really listens to people’s complains and amazingly, manages to address some of the flaws and issues on the screen of Sony Xperia Tablet Z.

This can be seen clearly on the next-gen Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 that now has so much better and improved display quality than predecessor.

Now the screen look vibrant, the colors are popping out and the viewing angle is really improved on this sequel model.

So if you’re still confused to pick up which one of these models that will suit you perfectly, i strongly recommend the latest-gen model because it has way better quality of screen, not to mention its improved technology embedded by Sony on the display of this device.

I know that my advice is so cliche because the new-gen device is obviously better than predecessor.

But i think it’s really important for you to know that the screen of previous-gen Sony Xperia Tablet Z is pretty mediocre for a flagship tablet.

And many tech reviewers and some famous tech sites even have the same opinions regarding this issue.

    User Interface

Similar just like the predecessor - Sony Xperia Tablet S -, the UIs of both Sony Xperia Tablet Z and Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 is actually still running on the same track.

And that is Sony’s fully-customized dark-themed UI all over the place.

This dark UI of Sony Xperia devices is actually my favorite UI that i even use the most on my non-Xperia smartphone.

So it looks really elegant, dark and impressively unique compared to other Android tablets out there that mostly use some light UIs and wallpapers.

In terms of features, of course the new-gen Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 will have much better and newer features compared to the previous-gen Sony Xperia Tablet Z.

But overall, i think many of the features on both devices are mostly similar one to another.

They have the same looking design layout, icons, notification & setting windows, app drawer, widgets, visual presentations or multi-window mode.

So if you’re also a big fan of dark-themed Xperia UI – just like me -, then you will feel at home when using any of these tablets.

As 2 flagship tablets, both Sony Xperia Tablet Z and Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 are supposedly great and powerful for gaming. And that’s true because any of these tablets is just great for playing games.

That’s thanks to their powerful Snapdragon processors and Adreno GPUs that Sony decides to cram inside these devices.

Sony Xperia Tablet Z receives the mid-end Snapdragon 600 processor along with Adreno 320 GPU, while the next-gen Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 gets the latest and greatest Snapdragon 801 processor as well as Adreno 330 GPU.

So with these types of hardware specs, no doubt that either Sony Xperia Tablet Z or Z2 is more than adequate to handle even the latest and graphics intense games like Asphalt 8: Airborne, Modern Combat 4, NOVA 3, Need for Speed Most Wanted, GTA Vice City or Dead Trigger 2.

However, when pitted side-by-side against each other, it’s just no-brainer that Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 is far more superior in gaming performance than the predecessor.

And that can be seen clearly when these 2 devices are deployed with a heavy game like GTA San Andreas. Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 – of course – has no issue at all when playing this game even in full highest graphics.

On the other hand, the previous-gen Sony Xperia Tablet Z will suffer a lot when handling this game in full highest graphics (with full graphics, visual effects, textures, objects, shadows, reflection, resolution, etc).

This is probably due to its Adreno 320 GPU that is not adequate to handle this game perfectly.

Meanwhile, Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 with its more powerful Adreno 330 GPU is definitely made to play GTA San Andreas in full potential of its graphics.

So between Sony Xperia Tablet Z and Z2, i think it’s quite obvious that the new-gen model is far more superior in gaming performance than Sony Xperia Tablet Z.

It goes the same with the gaming experience of Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 as a whole, which is still better than the predecessor, especially because it has much better quality display, longer battery life, more compact and thinner design, better sound quality (as proved by many reviews on YouTube) and it’s pretty much just a better gaming tablet than Sony Xperia Tablet Z.

Anyway guys, if you want to know more about the gaming performance of Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet vs Xperia Z, including what games that will run on these tablets, check out my YouTube video playlist or Pinterest page. :)

    Cameras

Similar just like the predecessor, Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 still shares the same 8.1MP camera on the back and 2.2MP camera on the front.

So basically, both of these devices are great for photography, even macro photography, thanks to Sony’s homemade camera module and expertise in camera technology and development.

However, when compared against each other, the next-gen Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 is definitely more superior especially in terms of sharpness and overall quality, especially when taking low-light photos/videos.

But even so, both of these 2 devices are still ideal for taking shots.

    Battery Life

Sony has been using the same exact non-removable 6000mAh battery capacity on all of its Xperia tablets.

So with this battery capacity, you can expect to see any of these devices survive in a solid day – of course in moderate use.

According to GSMarena, the battery life of Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 is longer than the predecessor, especially in talk time (multimedia) mode.

As a matter of fact, the battery life of Z2 is just a huge improvement over the predecessor.

It now has a promised 13 hours of battery life in talk time mode and 188 hours in music play – as opposed to the 10 hours of battery life in talk time and 110 hours in music play on Sony Xperia Tablet Z.

I believe this has something to do with the technology and battery saving mode that Sony has injected on the screen and software of the next-gen Sony Xperia Tablet Z2, making it more efficient with the use of battery life.

    My Personal Opinions

So in conclusion, i think it’s quite obvious that in this comparison review, i put favor more on the next-gen Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 than on the predecessor.

And i have many reasons to do that. One of them is their screen quality.

As i mentioned above, the display of Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 is a HUGE improvement and departure from the screen of predecessor.

And actually not just me, but almost all tech reviewers on YouTube and many tech sites also agree with the improvements made by Sony on the screen of this latest-gen model.

It now looks more vibrant and crisp, the colors are popping out and the viewing angle is really great on this device – as opposed the mediocre screen of Sony Xperia Tablet Z that looks washed out with bad viewing angle, plus muffled sound quality.

Besides on the screen department, the next-gen Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 is also more superior than Sony Xperia Tablet Z on other sectors – like processor, RAM, GPU, UI, features, software version, build quality (especially with metal trim all over the bezels), cameras, battery life, graphical performance and gaming experience as a whole (including gaming performance of course).

So with all of these huge improvements, i think it’s not that hard to make a final conclusion that Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 is just far better - either as a gaming tablet or just a media-consumption device – than Sony Xperia Tablet Z. No doubt about that.

I’m not saying that Sony Xperia Tablet Z really sucks.

Well, no that’s wrong because Sony Xperia Tablet Z is still a decent quality tablet.

However, when pitted side-by-side against the next-gen model, i think it’s really hard to recommend Sony Xperia Tablet Z to you, especially if you’re looking for a gaming tablet or even just a media-consumption device in general.
