Nokia Lumia 1520 vs HP Slate7 Extreme: Tablet BattleHi guys, welcome back to this site!

On this website, i’ve done a lot of reviews that involves one of my favorite gaming tablets of all time – HP Slate7 Extreme.

The reason why i always mentioned this tablet quite a lot in my previous reviews is because this HP Slate7 Extreme is a complete package of modern tablet.

I mean, i’m really amazed of how this device is really great for many things.

It has an amazing stylus (that even matches the writing and drawing experience of S-Pen on Samsung Note), it’s great and powerful for playing games, it has good quality cameras, it has great sound quality, it has stock Android OS and the most importantly, it costs only $199 even with microSD card slot.

So i think it’s just really hard to not recommend this tablet to you especially if you’re looking for a great stylus-equipped tablet with powerful gaming performance and good cameras.

Nokia Lumia 1520 vs HP Slate7 Extreme benchmarks and gaming performance

This is actually the reason why i’m really interested to compare this HP tablet against one of the flagship tablets from Nokia - Nokia Lumia 1520.

In terms of specs, of course Nokia Lumia 1520 is just way more superior than HP Slate7 Extreme.

However, that doesn’t mean that this Nokia’s tablet is a much better gaming tablet than HP Slate7 Extreme.

Well, if you’re interested to find out more about my comparison between these Nokia and HP tablets and see how they compete against each other in this review, including my take on their gaming experience and performance, then here you go, my comparison review between Nokia Lumia 1520 and HP Slate7 Extreme.

Around the tablet market, the existence of note-dedicated tablets is still pretty rare, even until today.

With Samsung GALAXY note series dominating this tablet category for quite so long, it makes it really difficult for other tablet manufacturers to compete against Samsung with their own stylus-equipped devices.

But that’s not so surprising because Samsung GALAXY Note is a really great quality note tablet with an amazing writing and drawing experience of its S-Pen.

You can literally create some beautiful paintings out of this stylus.

However, besides Samsung GALAXY Note tablets, there are actually some other note-dedicated devices around the tablet market – like HP Slate7 Extreme, Toshiba Excite Write and NVIDIA Shield Tablet.

But of course, from all of these contenders, only HP Slate7 Extreme and NVIDIA Shield Tablet that deserve to be the right equal challenger for Samsung famous note tablets.

They both have powerful performance and their stylus – the most importantly – is really amazing, even as great as the S-Pen of GALAXY Note, especially in terms of writing and drawing experience.

Meanwhile, Nokia Lumia 1520 is course not a note-dedicated tablet.

To be precisely, this Nokia device is actually more of a giant phone, instead of tablet, especially when knowing that many manufacturers already jump to 6-inch bandwagon with their smartphones, including Apple with its iPhone 6 Plus.

Unlike HP Slate7 Extreme, however, this Nokia Lumia 1520 falls in high-end flagship category, thanks to its high-grade powerful specs inside.

As gaming tablets, both Nokia Lumia 1520 and HP Slate7 Extreme are actually great and powerful equally to play games.

In fact, both of these devices ship with 2 of the best mobile processors on the market to date, Nokia Lumia 1520 is powered by a Snapdragon 800 processor, while HP Slate7 Extreme is more confident with its NVIDIA’s Tegra 4 chipset.

So basically, with these 2 processors, Nokia Lumia 1520 and HP Slate7 Extreme are more than adequate to handle even the heaviest-performing on the market right now.

But the questions remain. With all of the high-grade quality specs and powerful gaming performance found on both devices,

Which one between Nokia Lumia 1520 and HP HP Slate7 Extreme Extreme that deserves to be the best gaming tablet in this comparison review?

Which one between these 2 tablets that is a better device in the whole aspect?

Is it worth it to buy any of these tablets, especially for playing games?

As far as the design goes, both Nokia Lumia 1520 and HP Slate7 Extreme are hugely inspired by some of the existing devices on the market.

Nokia Lumia 1520 actually looks really similar with most of Nokia Lumia smartphones, especially with sharp looking design with sharp corners (with no rectangular shape) and of course the use of prominent eye-popping colors like red, yellow and many more.

Meanwhile, HP Slate7 Extreme takes some design cues of HTC’s flagship smartphone – HTC One, especially with the use of dual-speaker grilles on the front.

Between the 2, i’ve got to say that HP Slate7 Extreme has a much cooler looking design than Nokia Lumia 1520.

I’m not saying that the design of Nokia’s device really sucks.

It’s just that, i’ve never been a huge fan of Nokia Lumia devices, especially with their eye-popping colors, which some might say as so childish and immature, especially for adults.

But even so, the black and white variants of Nokia Lumia 1520 still look much better and more professional than the yellow and red models.

One amazing thing about HP Slate7 Extreme is, despite being an old-gen tablet released 2 years ago, this HP’s device impressively carries the specs that are still considered as great even powerful for today’s standards, especially for gaming.

The same applies to Nokia Lumia 1520.

Having been released a month before HP Slate7 Extreme came out, this Nokia’s device comes with the hardware that still deserve to sit alongside even the iPad mini or Samsung flagship devices on today’s tablet market.

Nokia Lumia 1520 comes with a 6-inch display sporting the 1080p resolution (1920x1080 pixels), a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2GHz, Adreno 330, 2GB of RAM, Windows Phone 8 OS, 20MP rear-facing camera with Carl Zeiss optics and dual-LED flash, 1.2MP front-facing shooter, microSD card slot for up to 64GB, 3400mAh battery capacity and some other standard features, including 4G LTE, NFC, cellular features and many more.

Meanwhile, despite being a mid-end category tablet, there are still many great things to appreciate from HP Slate7 Extreme.

It has a 7-inch display with 1280p resolution (1280x800 pixels), a quad-core Tegra 4 processor, 1GB of RAM, 72-core ULP GeForce GPU, Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, 5MP and VGA cameras back and front, microSD card slot for up to 32GB, 4100mAh battery and some other standard features, excluding cellular functionality, NFC and radio.

When pitted side-by-side against each other, it’s no brainer that the display of Nokia Lumia 1520 is more superior and much sharper compared to the one found on HP Slate7 Extreme.

And there’s nothing so surprising about that because Nokia Lumia 1520 comes with 1080p resolution on a smaller 6-inch device, as opposed to the 720p display on HP Slate7 Extreme.

In terms of sharpness, of course Nokia Lumia 1520 is the one that will come out as the winner here against HP Slate7 Extreme.

So for watching movies, reading books, browsing the web, editing documents or playing games, it’s a lot more fun to use Nokia Lumia 1520 rather than HP Slate7 Extreme.

The screen looks insanely sharp (especially thanks to all the pixels on 1080p resolution being crammed into a small 6-inch screen), text looks readable even from far distance, image looks crisp and everything just looks gorgeous.

Even so, having 720p resolution on a 7-inch display is actually good enough and it looks pretty sharp for most users.

But of course, you will always need to do a lot of pinch-to-zoom gesture especially when reading tiny text in books or browsing the web.

The good thing is, by using this medium-resolution display, HP Slate7 Extreme is actually able to perform much faster and smoother, plus more efficient with the use of battery.

Not to mention, the overheating issue of Tegra 4 probably doesn’t occur significantly on this device. All thanks to the use of 720p display, instead of 1080p screen.

    User Interface

One of the great things about HP Slate7 Extreme that probably makes tablet shoppers switch their targets from Nokia Lumia 1520 to HP’s tablet is definitely its UI.

So HP Slate7 Extreme comes pre-installed with the stock vanilla Android UI, based on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

On the other hand, i think Nokia Lumia 1520 looks pretty boring with its Live-Tile-based Metro UI of Windows Phone 8.

The platform, especially the UI of this Nokia’s tablet is very different compared to the Windows RT of its larger sibling - Nokia Lumia 2520.

So it lacks in user personal customizations and also productivity-related features found on Windows RT.

As a result, the UI of Nokia Lumia 1520 looks really static with no personalization on it.

And this can be quite boring especially if you’re the type of user who always loves to check out your device every minute or even seconds.

This really contradicts with HP Slate7 Extreme that comes with Android UI, the stock version that Google releases to all tablet partners.

It has the standard Android design layout, features, app drawer, drop-down notification and setting windows and of course, the one and only, the widget element.

And this really makes the experience of using this tablet a lot better than on Nokia Lumia 1520.

Not to mention, thanks to its DirectStylus, there are also some addition of features, tasks and pre-loaded apps related to the stylus, which makes this tablet really awesome especially for productive users.

So between the 2, i think it’s quite obvious that the UI or interface experience of HP Slate7 Extreme is just better than on the Nokia Lumia 1520.

In fact, this could probably be the reason why you should choose HP Slate7 Extreme instead of Nokia Lumia 1520.

The gaming performance of both Nokia Lumia 1520 and HP Slate7 Extreme are actually great equally.

Thanks to their powerful processors and GPUs (Snapdragon 800/Adreno 330 vs Tegra 4 along with 72-core GeForce ULP GPU), both of these devices are more than capable to handle even the latest and most graphics intense games like Modern Combat 5, Asphalt 8: Airborne or GTA San Andreas, even in full highest graphics.

However, when pitted side-by-side on the table, i’ve got to say that HP Slate7 Extreme is the one that will come out as the winner here against Nokia Lumia 1520.

Okay, Nokia Lumia 1520 may have a powerful performance – thanks to Snapdragon 800 and Adreno 330 plus 2GB of RAM.

However, there’s one thing that makes this device less appealing as a gaming tablet than HP Slate7 Extreme. And that is its platform/OS – Windows Phone 8.

So despite having powerful graphical and gaming performance, the Windows Phone 8 of Nokia Lumia 1520 actually is lacking when it comes to game catalog.

And that can be seen on the game collections found on Windows MarketPlace, which is not as huge as on Android OS or iOS.

As a result, there are many Android and iOS games that until now, are still unavailable on this Windows Phone 8.

So if you decide to buy Nokia Lumia 1520, then you must also accept the fact that many of your favorite games on Android or iOS will not be available on Nokia Lumia 1520.

This is way different with HP Slate7 Extreme.

Besides having powerful graphical and gaming performance, HP Slate7 Extreme also have a lot bigger game catalog on Google Play Store plus NVIDIA’s Game Hub (used to be called as Tegra Zone).

So basically, almost all of the games on iOS can be found also on Android OS of HP Slate7 Extreme.

And the great thing is, you can play all of these games on HP Slate7 Extreme even in full highest graphics, thanks to its powerful processor and GPU.

The other thing that also makes HP Slate7 Extreme a much better gaming tablet than Nokia Lumia 1520 is its sound speaker quality.

So thanks to the dual-front-speaker grilles on this HP tablet, the sound comes out really loud and clear, making the gaming experience of this device more realistic.

So if you’re really into gaming, i strongly recommend you to pick up HP Slate7 Extreme instead of Nokia Lumia 1520 simply because it has all of the popular games and apps that you’re already familiar to see today.

Not to mention, its gaming performance is also really powerful, so you can play all of those games without any hassle.

But even so, Nokia Lumia 1520 can still be considered as a great gaming tablet, of course in terms of performance.

So if you don’t mind with its limitation of game catalog, then this device is still a great choice for you.

Anyway guys, if you want to know more about the gaming performance of Nokia Lumia 1520 vs HP Slate7 Extreme, including what games that will run on these tablets, check out my YouTube video playlist or Pinterest page. :)

HP Slate7 Extreme may be proud with its superior UI, software, stylus and gaming experience and graphical performance, however, when it comes to camera, there’s no way HP tablet could win against Nokia Lumia 1520.

That’s shown perfectly by the megapixel number found on both devices.

Nokia Lumia 1520 is equipped with a mind-boggling 20MP rear-facing camera with Carl Zeiss optics and dual-LED flash.

Meanwhile, HP Slate7 Extreme looks more humble with its 5MP and VGA cameras back and front respectively.

So for taking photos or recording videos, it’s just no-brainer that Nokia Lumia 1520’s cameras take much better and sharper shots compared to HP Slate7 Extreme’s shooters.

And thanks to Nokia’s years of experience and expertise especially in the developments of its camera technology – known as PureView -, the camera quality of Nokia Lumia 1520 is just untouchable by HP Slate7 Extreme.

Even so, the cameras – especially the rear one – of HP Slate7 Extreme are actually still really good, especially when knowing that this device only costs $199.

So according to many reviews – even the videos from NVIDIA itself -, the rear-camera of this tablet impressively takes decent quality shots.

Its 720p or slo-mo videos also look quite nice for a device that costs only $199.

In fact, in my opinion, taking photos with HP Slate7 Extreme is actually a lot more fun than on Nokia Lumia 1520 because you can do some creative stuff on the photos by using its amazing stylus.

So if you’re looking for a tablet with great cameras, then Nokia Lumia 1520 or HP Slate7 Extreme are still great options to you.

    Battery Life

The other thing that makes Nokia Lumia 1520 a more superior tablet than HP Slate7 Extreme is definitely its battery life.

This is actually quite interesting to explore because Nokia Lumia 1520 comes with a much smaller 3400mAh battery, as opposed to a much bigger 4100mAh battery found on HP Slate7 Extreme.

But according to GSMarena, this Nokia’s tablet is capable to survive around 27 hours 40 minutes for talk time (multimedia), 768 hours for standby time and 188 hours for music play.

This is really impressive compared to HP Slate7 Extreme that could only last in 10 hours 30 minutes for talk time.

The most impressively is, Nokia Lumia 1520 comes with a much higher resolution 1080p display, while HP Slate7 Extreme is only sporting 720p resolution on its 7-inch display.

I believe the use of Windows Phone 8 OS – which is light-weight, simple and not complicated -, is the one to blame over the long lasting battery life found on Nokia Lumia 1520.

This really contradicts with HP Slate7 Extreme that comes with a fully-featured Android OS with a lot of elements, features and visual presentations here and there all over the software, not to mention, its Tegra 4 processor that can be really power hungry.

So bottom line, if you’re still looking for a decent powerful 6-inch tablet/giant phone with long lasting battery, then your destination is definitely on Nokia Lumia 1520.

However, HP Slate7 Extreme is still good in terms of battery.

But of course, if you use it to do some heavy intense tasks without resting the screen at all, then its battery life would drop drastically faster, probably around 4 to 7 hours, maybe less than that.

    My Personal Opinions

So in conclusion, between Nokia Lumia 1520 and HP Slate7 Extreme, i think both tablets are really great equally, especially as a photography tablet and note-dedicated device respectively.

And they both also have their own strengths and weaknesses against each other.

Nokia Lumia 1520 may have a much sharper display, far better cameras and long lasting battery, however, HP Slate7 Extreme is also really prominent with its powerful Tegra 4, amazing stylus experience, fully-featured Android UI and better sound speaker quality.

Besides, the cameras and battery life of HP Slate7 Extreme are actually not too shabby at all.

In terms of gaming performance, both Nokia Lumia 1520 and HP Slate7 Extreme are also really powerful equally and ideal as gaming devices.

All thanks to their high-grade flagships internal hardware found on both devices.

Nokia Lumia 1520 is taken care by Snapdragon 800 processor, while HP Slate7 Extreme is handled by Tegra 4.

So basically, with any of these 2 tablets, you’re able to play any kind of games and even the most graphically demanding games in today’s standards – like GTA San Andreas or Modern Combat 5 -, all in smooth buttery performance and in full highest graphics.

However, between the 2, i’ve got to say that HP Slate7 Extreme is a much better gaming tablet than Nokia Lumia 1520.

They both may have similar powerful gaming performance, however, the platform of Nokia Lumia 1520 – which is Windows Phone 8 OS – is really lacking in terms of game catalog.

So there are so many many popular or unpopular games (on Android and iOS) that are still unavailable on Windows Phone 8.

This really contradicts with HP Slate7 Extreme that has almost all of the games that you already see on iOS, thanks to Android platform.

But even so, both of these devices are still decent quality tablets.

Nokia Lumia 1520 has a much sharper display, better cameras and longer battery life, while HP Slate7 Extreme has a much better gaming experience (game catalog and better sound quality), amazing stylus and Android OS that has a lot of cool useful features and better personalization than Nokia Lumia 1520.

At the end of the day, the final decision to buy any of these tablets will totally come down to your personal preference.

I mean, if you’re looking for a 6-inch giant phone with sharp display, great cameras, powerful specs and long lasting battery life, then Nokia Lumia 1520 can be a great choice for you.

Meanwhile, if you’re in the search for a note-dedicated that has powerful gaming performance, amazing stylus, stock Android UI, good quality sound speakers, decent cameras and good battery, then HP Slate7 Extreme can also be the right tablet for you.
